PEMBROKE Mayor Dennis Evans has hailed this week’s visit by BBC’s Antiques Roadshow to Pembroke Castle a great success.

The ever-popular Sunday evening programme Antiques Roadshow visited Pembroke Castle on Wednesday, September 7, in a free event.

The doors for Antiques Roadshow opened at 9.30am and close at 4.30pm, bringing crowds of visitors with their treasured possessions.

Many of Britain’s leading antiques and fine arts specialists were on hand to offer free advice and valuations to visitors, who were invited to raid their attics and bring along their family heirlooms, household treasures and car-boot sale bargains for inspection by the experts.

Antiques Roadshow presenter Fiona Bruce said: “The best part of working on Antiques Roadshow is that we never know who or what is going to turn up on the day.

“The visitors, the objects they bring, their stories and the location all combine to make a fabulous experience that we aim to capture for the viewers.”

Antiques Roadshow Executive Producer Simon Shaw said: “Pembroke Castle is the perfect location for Antiques Roadshow, it has a fascinating history and a magnificent setting on the River Cleddau.”

Cllr Evans said: “It was an excellent day, the castle did an excellent job in getting the programme down there, and they’ve done a tremendous amount good for the town this summer.

“I’d like to think it did a great deal for the town, and obviously the weather helped.

“The people that were there throughout enjoyed the experience, and there must have been an overspill in to the town.

“It will be interesting to see how it comes out on TV when it is shown; that has to be a good spin-off for the town, with people saying: ‘that looks like a nice place’. I think everybody won on that day.

“It was an excellent day, and all credit to Jon Williams at Pembroke Castle and to the trustees for letting it go ahead.”
