The sale of fund-raising wrist bands at Fishguard's New Year's Eve Street party has proved a roaring success with nearly three times as much money taken in donations compared to 2015.

Each year the party costs around £6,000 to put on, this covers the cost of closing the street, insurance, paying the entertainers, security cover and hiring a sound system. The stunning fireworks display to mark midnight is donated and sponsored by Stena.

After making a small loss in 2015 Fishguard and Goodwick Community Events Association, who organise the event, decided to sell wristbands for £3, emblazoned with the slogan "I'm supporting Fishguard NYE Street Party".

The bands were sold by various businesses and shops in the twin towns as well as by bucket collectors on the night.

The party which welcomed 2017 was a huge success; with dry weather, breath-taking fireworks and top entertainment provided by Beware the Tortoise, 2's Enough and headliners Honey Fungus. Piper Keith Wellings played in 2017 and the whole event was held together by compere Sophie Oliver.

The wrist band idea was equally successful with £2,100 taken in donations. This means that the event, which also received funding from the town council and other community groups and generates an income through marquee hire, looks to have made a small profit this year.

"It's been absolutely ideal for us," said the association's secretary Alan Hodgson.

"We believe much of that is due to the promotion of the wrist bands."

Mr Hodgson said that the association is already planning the line-up for next year's event and will attempt to get wrist bands in the shops and businesses towards the end of the summer so that more people can contribute.

"A big thank you to shop keepers and hoteliers who sold the wrist bands,to the bucketeers on the night and all those who donated," he added.
