Both St Davids RNLI lifeboats and the coastguard rescue helicopter were tasked to reports of a “body” at the bottom of a cliff yesterday, Tuesday August 1.
The all-weather lifeboat and helicopter were initially called to the aid of a dive boat in difficulty off the coast between Abereiddy and Porthgain. The commercial dive vessel Wandrin' Star broadcast a Pan Pan urgency message at around 1.40pm to say that she was taking on water.
The lifeboat was quickly on scene and put two crew members and a salvage pump onboard to start pumping out the vessel. With the water level dropping, the source of the incoming water was found and fixed.
As the lifeboat escorted the dive vessel to safety, the station’s inshore lifeboat, all weather boat and the coastguard helicopter were tasked to reports of a body at the bottom of the cliff in the Caerfai Bay area.
The ILB and helicopter found the “casualty”, a man who had fallen asleep while sunbathing and only woke up when he heard the helicopter above him, with no idea of the commotion his nap had caused.
The incident was treated as a false alarm with good intent and both boats were then released to return to station.
