THE 66th Martletwy and District YFC Show proved one of the best in many years, with high numbers of visitors enjoying the fine weather at the Carew showground.

The show, held on August 23, also saw good entries across the exhibitors’ classes.

Assistant Show Secretary Rachel Mathias said: “It was superb, I’m pretty sure it was the biggest crowd we’ve had; I wouldn’t even begin to guess the numbers we had.

“It was big crowds and great weather.

“It was that happy medium that people didn’t want to go to the beach.

“We had good horse entries, excellent sheep entries, and good cattle entries; entries were good across the board.

“We had Pembrokeshire Falconry there, they were excellent, and the South Pembs Foxhounds.”

She added: “We had excellent commentary for the beef judging from Will Prichard of Radio Pembrokeshire.”

The winner of the Supreme Horse had a special connection with the show.

“We had the Supreme Horse championships, judged by Simon Hart, the Supreme Horse, Limerick Lad belonged to Kizzy Lucas from Ammanford; her mum Kirsty is a past secretary of Martletwy Show,” said Rachel.

Explaining the continued success of the show, Rachel said: “It is a very practical site, a good size, with hard-standing for parking, so it’s never a worry, and we work really hard at it to make it a success.

“Exhibitors-wise we do quite a lot of advertising, and there’s a lot of classes, a class for everyone.

“We speak to a lot of our exhibitors and encourage them to come.

“We obviously get the holiday crowds because of the time of year, and the local agricultural community is very supportive; nobody wants to see the show finish.”
