THE reputation of Merlins Bridge ABC boxer Mickey Mcdonagh continues to grow after the 21-year-old turned in a superb performance at an international tournament in Bosnia last month.
Representing the GB Elite Senior Squad, the Pembroke Dock youngster won gold in the 60 kgs (lightweight) class at the Bosnia Mustafa competition in Sarajevo.
He beat Macedonia’s Jasin Lama on points in the final, and his dominant display was further rewarded by organisers when he was named the ‘best boxer of the tournament’ at the end of the two day event.
This latest success represents another major step forward for Mcdonagh, who has already qualified to represent Wales at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, Australia, next April.
Unsurprisingly, his longer term goal is to represent Team GB at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Mcdonagh has spent the past decade training at Merlins Bridge under the guidance of the club’s head coach, Graham Brockway.
He has already represented his country at schoolboy, junior, and senior level, and regularly trains with the national squad.
