PORTFIELD Fair could be moved to a larger site in Haverfordwest in future years, as talks are planned between the town council, the fair’s workers, and Pembrokeshire County Council for next year.

Speaking at Haverfordwest Town Council’s meeting on Wednesday, October 18, Cllr Sue Murray asked members to consider the future of Portfield Fair, and said plans should be put in place to move it to Rifleman Field.

“I am proposing we take this forward and get a definite answer once and for all. This has been rumbling on since they left St Thomas’ Green,” she said.

“If it gets put to bed it will disappear in just five years. If that goes then Pembroke Fair will be gone too,” Cllr Murray warned.

Cllr Murray also gave a list of what would need to be done before the fair could be moved, which included:

1. A consultation with residents near Rifleman Field.

2. Discussion with local councillors.

3. Full details of the fair set-up

4. Proposals for how the fair would operate.

The town council now plans to meet with the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain and Pembrokeshire County Council in February 2018 to discuss the future of the fair.

Councillors also discussed the possibility of concerns about noise if the fair was moved to the Rifleman Field, as residents had made noise complaints when it was on St Thomas’ Green.

Cllr Deri Jones said he did not think noise complaints would be a problem.

“I have lived on the green. You don’t hear it, it finishes at half past 10 at the latest,” he said.

But Cllr Barbara Morgan said: “It wasn’t the actual fair that drew complaints – it was when the fair finished and everybody went back to their caravans and put their stereos on until 3 o’clock in the morning.”

Cllr Alan Buckfield, the mayor, said that this had been solved in the past by moving the showmen’s accommodation to a different site to the main fair.
