HAVERFORDWEST’s new Welsh-medium school has opened its doors to visitors, giving them a peek inside before it opens in September this year.

Ysgol Caer Elen, based on the edge of the Withybush Industrial Estate, will open in the new school year, and is designed for pupils aged 3 to 16.

The school will take on the pupils from Glan Cleddau Primary School, including the current Year 6, who will make up the school’s first secondary school class.

Pupils from Glan Cleddau visited the site on Monday, April 30, alongside headteacher Aled Davies and Cath Davies of Pembrokeshire County Council’s 21st century schools programme.

Aled Davies, headteacher at Ysgol Glan Cleddau said: “It is a very exciting time for Welsh-medium education in Haverfordwest.

“This is the second Welsh-medium secondary school in Pembrokeshire now and it has been established as a result of the growth of our primary schools,” he said.

“When we opened Glan Cleddau in 1996 we had 60-odd children. There are 300 at the moment.”

The building has separate upper and lower school areas, each with their own dining halls.

Planned facilities include a dance studio, a sports hall, playground areas for the upper and lower school, mixed-used sports pitches and a 3G pitch.

Willmott-Dixon is the construction company behind the work, and has an average of 120 staff on-site on any one day.

The company is currently taking part in a charity challenge to raise money for three buildings across Wales and the West: Rest Bay Surf Life Guard Club, Sidmouth Surf Life Saving Club and Portishead Open Air Pool.

Pupils from Glan Cleddau joined Willmott-Dixon’s efforts towards the All Hands On Deck challenge, helping towards the goal of rowing 5,400km, or the equivalent of rowing the Atlantic from Bristol to New York.
