FOUR musicians from Pembrokeshire rocked the stage at St Davids Hall, Cardiff, last week, accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (NOW).

Siwan Roberts and Nicholas Higgons from the Portfield Social Activity Day Centre along with Richard Young and Stephen Lucas from Wings Over Pembrokeshire were invited to Cardiff after a series of NOW workshops in Pembrokeshire run by musician Andy Pidcock led workshops alongside NOW musicians.

The days were a great success but unfortunately the final one, as well as family concert in Haverfordwest, was cancelled because of the snow.

To make up for this the four musicians were invited to join the orchestra at their family concert at St Davids Hall on Sunday, May 13.

“They were treated like celebrities,” said Stephen’s father Tony. "They were put up in Cardiff Bay and given guided tours of Hoddinott and St Davids Halls and were so well looked after during rehearsals over the weekend.”

During the NOW family concert, and in front of a nearly full house, the four Pembrokeshire musicians were joined by four NOW players to perform the dynamic piece Na Na La la.

Stephen was on banjo, Siwan on violin, Nicholas on guitar and Richard on harmonica.

“They really put on a great show,” said Tony. “It was great to watch and they got a huge round of applause from the audience.”

Andy Pidcock added:

“After running music workshops at the Portfield Day Centre with the Wings Over Pembrokeshire group, we had a great group of instrumentalists to take to St. Davids Hall in Cardiff.

“A busy weekend followed. We had rehearsals with the full orchestra, and a packed house at St. Davids Hall came to see our incredible piece come to life.

“Nick, Steven, Siwan and Richard rose to the occasion and performed brilliantly. We loved it.”
