A woman who downed a third of a bottle of gin, after arriving home from a Goodwick pub, has been cleared of drink-driving.

Mabel Lily Thompson, of Malpas Road, Newport, Gwent, stood trial at Haverfordwest magistrates court on Monday, July 30, after denying driving while over the legal alcohol limit.

Vaughan Pritchard-Jones, prosecuting, told the court that police officers called at Thompson’s holiday accommodation in Sleddau after a report she had been drink-driving at around 11pm on April 8.

Thompson, 26, stated she had consumed two gin and tonics, part of a tequila shot and a few sips of lager and lime in a Goodwick pub after walking the coastal path with friends.

She told the court she then drank a third of a litre or 75cl bottle of supermarket gin, neat, in less than ten minutes when she returned to the accommodation because she was upset, which accounted for her being over the legal limit when tested.

“I drove to the place where we were staying and straight away I drank a lot of gin. I had some sad news the week before, which is the reason for us going away.

“I finished off what was in the bottle of gin, I got into my pyjamas and that’s when there was a knock on the door from the police.”

She was found to have 83mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit is 35mg, but the bench accepted her account that she had driven her parents’ Landrover Discovery before exceeding the acceptable level.

The court heard that an expert’s report stated Thompson’s reading was consistent with the total amount of alcohol she had consumed, and Huw Davies, defending, added that there was no evidence to contradict what she said.

Magistrates found her not guilty of the offence following the hearing.
