Dear Editor — The article ‘Bluestone mystery deepens’ (Western Telegraph September 24th), aroused my interest.
I have always thought the suggestion that the colouring of the rock led to its selection could be right.
The dolerite on Carn Menin is an intense, very dark blue, with white feldspar spots and looks exactly like a clear night sky. Since Stonehenge is thought to be a sacred astronomical observatory, the connection is obvious.
Also the discovery of the remains of large Bronze Age boats in the Humber Estuary makes the idea of transport by man far more believable.
So I prefer to believe Preseli produced the stones, and our ancestors took them to Stonehenge by water.
