A Newcastle Emlyn mum has been voted Wales' regional Mum of the Year in a competition run by the Western Telegraph's parent company Newsquest and our sister website Netmums.

Fiona White was nominated for the competition by her mum after helping secure hundreds of thousands of pounds to improve Newcastle Emlyn's King George V Playing Fields; becoming a town councilor and passing her nursing degree with first class honours.

The judging panel who chose Fiona as Welsh Mum of the Year were impressed by her staggering achievements, and for being determined to grapple with life's challenges and make a difference to the community.

Siobhan Freegard, founder of Netmums said: “Fiona epitomises the spirit of modern mums who are the hidden foundations of our lives, doing hours of unpaid work to help family, friends and local groups."

Fiona has two daughters, Teigan and Holly and insists that she is just a normal mum.

"Helping raise £104,000 in 6 months for a new park here in Newcastle Emlyn and completing my nursing degree were the reasons my mum nominated me," she said. "Not because I have exemplary parenting skills - I just try my best like everyone else and have the same tears and tantrums!"

Each of the12 UK regional mums of the year wins a week's family holiday in France courtesy of Siblu Holidays. With the overall winner receiving a two week holiday with Siblu Holidays including 500 euros spending money.

"We haven't had a holiday for years," said Fiona.

"I would really love to take Barney [my husband] and the girls away for a well earned break this summer after putting up with me last year with all the non-stop campaigning and studying."
