A Goodwick baby made a surprise appearance in a snowy layby after extreme weather conditions caused problems for an ambulance crew.

Catrin James went into labour early on Thursday morning (February 5th). Her partner Shaun Kendrick called an ambulance, but icy road conditions made it impossible to drive up Stop and Call hill.

Shaun had to dig his car out of the snow to take Catrin to meet paramedics in Goodwick, and the ambulance set off for Withybush hospital.

He said: It was a bit of a nightmare at the time. There was snow everywhere and we were panicking because the ambulance couldn’t get to the house.

By the time the ambulance reached Letterston, Catrin’s labour was so advanced, the crew was forced to pull over into a layby and her baby boy was delivered at the roadside at 6.18am.

Shaun took their 16-month-old son Jayden to his mother’s house, and followed in his car, but the baby was born before he arrived.

He said: “It all happened so quickly. I was gutted that I missed the birth, but glad for Catrin that it wasn’t a long labour. Her waters broke at 5.30am, and the baby was born an hour later.”

Shaun praised the ambulance crew Hywel James and Robert Rees for their efforts.

Robert Rees has been in the ambulance service for 17 years, but had never delivered a baby in these conditions before. Shaun said: “They were great. They do so many good things and don’t get recognised enough for it.”

Despite the unusual location for her delivery, Catrin was back at home with her new son the same afternoon, after being checked over at the hospital.

The couple were still thinking of a name for their newborn as the Western Telegraph went to press this week.
