A family which is putting up its home and business as the prize in a pub quiz says it is well on their way to the scheme being a winner.

Steve and Christie Goymer are offering a prize package worth more than £300,000 to the lucky person who comes out on top in the contest.

They already have ‘a couple of thousand’ entries, at £20 a time, to the competition for The Plash Inn in the village of Llanfallteg, together with living accommodation and a holiday cottage, said Christie.

“We’ve had entries from as far afield at the Cayman Islands and Chile, although the majority are from the UK,” she added.

“We had a few technical problems with our online payment provider in the first few weeks, but everything is running smoothly again now.”

The couple have been running The Plash for the past five years, but decided to rethink their lives after the arrival of their second son, Ioan, now two, who has Down’s Syndrome.

They turned to the pub quiz idea after finding it difficult to get a buyer for the business.

“All people have to do is answer four multiple choice questions and then complete a tie-breaker saying why they would like to win the pub,” explained Christie.

“The winner will get their own property and business completely mortgage free — they can sell it, run it or put a manager in; whatever they choose. We will even offer them four weeks’ free advice if they are new to the pub trade.”

The couple, originally from Nuneaton, plan to continue living in west Wales once they can move out of The Plash.

“The aim is to have 30,000 entries by the closing date at the end of June which will generate £600,000 — that will cover all our overheads, including legal fees, and enable us to make a 5% donation to both the Down’s Syndrome Association and the British Heart Foundation,” said Christie.

“We’ll still go ahead with the draw if there is a 90% entry, but if not, we’ll extend it to the end of September.”
