Thousands of pounds worth of damage has been caused, following a fire at Carew airfield.

The fire started in a chalet type portable building, believed to belong to caravan business Right Price Caravans.

Another portable building and three caravans were also damaged in the blaze.

Fire fighters were called to the incident at 12.50 this morning (Friday) by the police, who had spotted the blaze during a routine patrol. Two appliances from Pembroke Dock and two from Tenby were tasked to the scene.

A Land Rover was also deployed in case caravans needed towing away from the fire.

Pembroke Dock watch manager Graham Callan said there were initial fears that one of the caravans could be occupied. Fortunately this was not the case and nobody was injured in the blaze.

The fire, which was well alight by the time fire crews arrived on the scene, was initially tackled with ground monitors, hoses fixed on a metal frame, due to the close proximity of gas cylinders to the blaze. Fire fighters later used hand held jets to completely extinguish the fire.

The fire was made more difficult to tackle because of a shortage of water at the airfield. Watch manager Callan explained that as there was no nearby hydrant two fire engines shuttled water to the blaze from the Milton Brewery.

Despite this the blaze was dealt with in around an hour. "All fire fighters worked well. They worked hard to ensure the fire did not escalate," said Mr Callan.

Fire investigation officers say that the blaze was caused accidentally, possibly by an electric heater that had been left plugged in overnight.

Mr Callan advised people to turn off appliances at the plug if they were going out for the day, or out overnight, as a faulty appliance could start a fire.

Free home fire safety checks can be carried out by local fire fighters who will offer safety advice and fit a free smoke alarm if needed.

Mr Callan said the checks could also be carried out in caravans.
