Reports that a new Tesco supermarket for Fishguard has been signed and sealed by Pembrokeshire County Council have been dismissed by several sources this week.

Last Friday a local newspaper reported that a deal had been fixed "in a top level meeting between supermarket executives and council officials".

Pembrokeshire County Council said that no such meeting had taken place. They said that they had appointed Chelverton Deeley Freed as the preferred developer for the Fishguard Junior School site two years ago.

Some time ago Tesco also signed a contract with Chelverton Deeley Freed that they would be the operating supermarket for the site.

"Although it is understood that Tesco has board approval in place for the development, Chelverton is still awaiting confirmation from Tesco that it wishes to proceed," said a county council spokesman.

A spokesman for Tesco said that the previous reports were an "oversimplification" of the situation and that they were still working through some of the legal details of the site with the developers.

They said that a new school would have to be built before the present junior school could be demolished.

The final design for the 20,000 square foot store, which could be built in 18 weeks, is still being worked on and will be subject to planning permission and public consultation.

It would employ over 100 people, have around 130 parking spaces and sell food, health and beauty products and some basic clothing,
