The internationally acclaimed ecological documentary, Age of Stupid, is coming to a local school screen tonight, thanks to a climate-guilty ex-pupil and a keen green headmaster.

Ex Ysgol-Y-Preseli pupil, Gwen Watson, has spent the last nine years living in Australia, and wants to attempt to ‘offset’ the hefty carbon footprint she has accumulated flying between her two homes, by sharing this groundbreaking film with pupils from her old school and the local community.

“I’ve heard so much about what a life changing movie this is and have been looking forward to seeing it for a long time,” said Gwen who attended Preseli from 1987-1992.

“I know it has a profound effect on audience members and the way they live and travel and am hoping it will have an equally positive effect on everyone who comes to see it in Crymych, especially the pupils.”

The thought-provoking film stars Oscar nominee Pete Postlethwaite OBE as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, looking at “archive” footage from 2008 and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?

The screening, which is open to the public, has been organised in conjunction with local not-for-profit social co-op Live Lightly (www.livelightly.co.uk), who obtained a grant from the Welsh Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) specifically to screen the film.

The evening has been made possible by the support and enthusiasm of new Headmaster Michael Davies, who recognises the importance of this groundbreaking film.

“When I approached the school I wasn’t sure if they’d be interested,” explains Gwen.

“But I was impressed to receive a call from the Headmaster himself with an offer to support the screening in any way possible. I just wish we’d had access to this information when I was at school.”

Also showing on the night will be short Welsh film Eco Worriors. The screening starts at 7.30 at Ysgol Y Preseli. Entry is ₤2 for members of the public, free for Preseli pupils and children under 12yrs. Donations welcome.

The films will be followed by refreshments and a Q&A session with Gordon James of Pembrokeshire Friends of the Earth and Paul Wimbush from the Lammas Eco-Community. on Friday 26 March at.
