Junior Rugby Union Cup Final

Whitland 21 Crymych 3

Whitland Seconds were worthy winners of the Junior Union Cup Final, outlasting their gritty counterparts from Crymych and scoring three tries without reply.

The only riposte from the Preseli Men was a solitary penalty by young fly half Aled Morgan in the second period.

A measure of how competitive the first half was can be gauged by the fact that Whitland were only 5-0 to the good at the interval from a try by flanker Cerith McNally, with skipper Kristian Richards missing the conversion and earlier penalty.

The Preseli Men responded with Morgan's three-pointer but lost scrum half Bedwyr John, flanker Andrew Morris (junior) and centre Wayne Bowen, all injured, soon after the restart and this inevitably disjointed their efforts, despite some good work by Wyn Jenkins in organising cover and by forwards Andrew Fletcher, Rhys Mathias and Mark Oakman.

The Borderers increased their lead to eight points as centre Wayne Morris slotted two penalties and in the closing stages Kristian Phillips sliced through for a try and Morris applied the coup de grace when he also grabbed an unconverted try.

Richards picked up the Junior Union Cup on behalf of Whitland from PDJRU chairman Berry Rogers (PD Quins) and both sides deserve a pat on the back for their commitment and determination to please the crowd at Heywood lane.

The match was well refereed by Marc James, with Colin Phillips and Mark Smith as his touch judges.
