Theatre preview: Ty ar y Tywod (A House On Sand) , Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan, May 13th-14th

Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru - the Welsh National Touring Company - present a timeless classic by one of 20th century Wales' most prolific and versatile dramatists at Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan, next month.

The late Gwenlyn Parry's Ty ar y Tywod (A House On Sand) is considered an important milestone in the development of the Welsh theatre.

First staged in 1968, the play has often been compared to the surreal and absurd works of world-renowned dramatists Harold Pinter and Eugne Ionesco.

A former BBC Wales drama producer, Gwenlyn Parry, who died in 1991, was the author of Grand Slam, the classic 1978 television comedy. He also went on to launch, write and produce the BBC's longest running soap opera, Pobol y Cwm.

Ty ar y Tywod isbasically the story of two men - one who lives in a hut on the beach and the other the owner of a nearby fairground.

The fair man wants to extend his noisy, successful, fair, but his plans are hindered by the house man who's hell-bent on protecting his home that's gradually sinking into the sand anyway.

"The play focuses on the conflicts which ensues when the old, traditional and albeit decaying way of life is threatened by new, modern and shallow developments," said Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru's marketing manager, Elwyn Williams.

One pre-performance specially adapted talk and question and answer session for Welsh language learners will be provided at each venue.

Students studying Ty ar y Tywod as part of their A-level drama syllabus are also invited to meet the director to discuss the script-to-staging process.
