DEAR EDITOR, - I was very pleased to see (Western Telegraph, March 30th) the pro-active approach of Councillors Stock and Bryan to the drunken-fuelled behaviour which blights Haverfordwest town centre at weekends.

They are right to refer to 'massive concerns', as this is indeed a very unpleasant and violent area on a Friday and Saturday night. Their move to ban drinking in public places would be a very good start.

Britain has developed a yob and binge drinking culture, which needs to be eradicated if we ever want to bring order and quality back to our town centres. These should be placed for all people - not just foul-mouthed drunks.

Pubs, local authorities, magistrates, licensing authorities, parents, all have a role to play. And so do the police. I was dismayed, however, by Inspector Jones comment that 'We don't want to arrest anyone'.

Why not? Drunken people smashing bottles and acting aggressively, which is commonplace, are not simply 'enjoying' themselves. They are causing a public nuisance and breaking the law.

Arrests are certainly needed for the behaviour I have witnessed - these people might then get the message that their anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.

Zero tolerance is the answer, not the softly, softly approach which Inspector Jones seems to favour. It has not solved this problem over the last ten years.

CLIVE PAUL 2 Dunsany Park, Haverfordwest.
