Dear Editor, - Having read Alison Hardy's letter, Question Of Priorities (February 2nd), I would like to point out the misconception that those who work with the elderly can be untrained and unqualified.

All carers who undertake such work undergo a four-day induction training period following the usual Criminal Records Bureau and medical checks.

They also receive on-the-job training and while performing their duties are 'shadowed' by senior staff until they are capable of working alone.

They are also expected to attain an NVQ in care of the elderly and those who work in domicillary and residential homes are inspected twice a year by the Care Standards in Wales.
