live review: Shanna's Aquarian Party Queens Hall, Narberth, January 21st The seventh annual Aquarian Party landed this year on DJ Shanna's birthday, making it a special night of global fusion and party atmosphere.

The hall was decorated spectacularly by Shanna and many of the audience were suitably exotically dressed.

The headline act Bloco Electro, who played an array of acoustic and electronic percussion, have been described as 'a sound clash between tradition and technology; electric sambadelic.'

They were sometimes underwhelming, but the floor still filled up with colourful and inventive dancing.

Of the live music on offer, let's focus on the local band that the promoters described as 'our very own high concept experimental soundscape visual artists', better known as Zi-Kronic Waves and playing at this west Wales temple of music for the first time.

Theremin, melodeon, bicycle wheel, guitar, bass, typewriter, keyboards, turntables, masks - not the contents of an antique shop but the accoutrements of this seven-piece collective.

The visuals, by The Unheard, which were essential to the performance, captured the transitory mood of the music which was flavoured with Can, Gong, Riley and various other abstract influences.

With a preference for texture over tunes their opus slowly built into a thing of substantial sonic consequence. Zi-Kronic Waves tread a fine line between ostentatious pretentiousness, homespun jiggery-pokery and genuine inventiveness.

Even the audience seemed unsure whether to dance or stand and stare in amazement. The collective was fronted by a terrified and demented looking masked figure wearing a bewildered expression.

Although standing in front of a mic as if to sing, no sound materialised from the creature; was this a break with the normal conventions of a vocalist or a technical hitch?

With these visual artists, who knows. To one side The Gray played his guitar like an exotic instrument, in a primitive sort of way, when he wasn't hunched over a spinning bicycle wheel like some ancient wizard casting a spell, or conjuring up weird vibrations with this theremin.

Zi-Kronic Waves are strange and intriguing; unwittingly they have released a monster and it's probably too late to return it to its cage.
