DEAR EDITOR, - Dr Perry is right to remind us of how much Pembrokeshire owes to the late Dr Eirian Williams' public comments over attempts to downgrade services at Withybush Hospital in the 1960s.
Dr Williams alerted me to the Welsh Office's ludicrous proposal to move all paediatric beds to Carmarthen. Together with my friend, the late Mrs Stella Berry, and aided by a host of angry parents, we launched a campaign to retain a ward in Haverfordwest.
Happily, we were successful.
When I read the phrase, 'six specialities were not considered clinically or financially viable', my blood boils. We are not talking about statistics or unit costs, we are talking about services to local people.
I hope I shall not have to take to the streets again. However, if it becomes necessary - I most certainly will!
MRS JULIA F. WHITE Cherry Trees, Port Lion, Llangwm.
