DEAR EDITOR, - I recently called into our local job centre and was offered the opportunity to apply for a job as a care worker for the elderly, visiting them in their own homes.
I have no experience in working with the elderly, rather my forte is in caring for children.
I pointed this out to the woman in the job centre and she immediately pointed out that you need qualifications before even thinking about working with children.
It struck me that there must be, through no fault of their own, a number of untrained or unqualified people who are working in residential homes for the elderly or visiting them at home, yet we hear so much about cases of neglect, abuse, robbery and cruelty of the vulnerable in our society, in the many homes which serve our communities?
