An exhibition of paintings by Beth Marsden and photographs by Richard Johnson opened on Friday evening at Oriel Queens Hall Gallery, Narberth.

The appreciative crowd soon started competing for the stunning paintings by Beth, who graduated from West Wales School of Art, Carmarthen, last July.

Her handling of paint and excellent composition belies her young age, and her subject matter -portraits of her family, market traders and young women - invite the viewer to wonder at the stories behind them. Beth has used photo montage, acrylics, oils and pastels to create truly original works. The exhibition is on until February 5th.

The photographs on the stairs by Richard Johnson, who also went to Carmarthen for foundation and is now at Falmouth studying photography, are studies of friends and surroundings that have influenced him.

Unusual viewpoints and interesting compositions make Richard's work stand out from the usual studies of portraiture, and his background of growing up in Milford Haven is sensitively used to convey his youthful interests.

The gallery now hosts a showcase for ceramics and sculptures and original work also adorns the walls of the caf. The gallery is open most days but telephone if travelling far, on 01834 861212.
