Dear Editor, - The Park's 'homes for locals' policy indeed looks pointless with too few new homes in the first place (R. James, Letter, August 6th).

The County Plan proposes 9,000 dwellings, an 18% increase to 2016; including 283 in the Park - 3%, although around 25% of the population lives there, in about 12,000 households. Park housing will thus grow by 2% at most, with much of it already allocated in the existing Local Plan, which runs to 2005, likely to be built by then.

More than 60% will be 'affordable', mainly for rent, (compared with 13% county-wide); leaving an average eight new Park homes a year for sale at most. 'Locals only' applied to these few will produce acute competition among locals themselves, with no impact on incomers' competition for existing housing.

The situation will be worse in some areas. The NPA proposes no new plots at all in the Northern (Fishguard to Poppit and Preselis) sector! The new plan reduces those already listed in the Local Plan. With no new building, competition will increase; and 'Locals only' seems mere spin, disguising general restrictions against local people's interests.
