Young techno-wizards from Ysgol Dyffryn Taf have been named the UK's best boffins by the BBC's Tomorrow's World programme.

An infra-red electric guitar designed by the team of 12-year-olds won first prize at the Young Innovator of the Year competition in London's Olympic centre.

The five year seven pupils appeared on television on July 16th, after winning the competition's 11 - 12 age category.

Young scientists from all over the country were challenged to make use of high-tech QTC (quantum tunnelling composite) material, which changes its electrical properties when pressed or twisted.

The Dyffryn Taf group's guitar works with infra-red beams taking the place of strings, and the QTC material used along the fret board.

Matthew Elms, from St Clears, Emma Privett, Llanboidy, Jonathan Owen, Bancyfelin, Erin Careless, Llanddewi Velfry and Mickey Bates, Trelech, were representing Wales after winning the regional category in Cardiff several weeks before.

Tomorrow's World has rewarded them with a trip to Thorpe Park, where they can learn about designing rollercoasters from the people who design them.

Headmaster, Robert Newsome, said: "We are exceptionally proud of the pupils. "Their success is testament to the quality of the science and design technology work they are exposed to here in school.

Lifelong learning executive board member Mary Thomas said: "It is a good omen for the future of Carmarthenshire to see our young people and school enjoying such great success."
