A CARDIGAN COUPLE have put what they believe to be a genuine collection of paintings by Hitler on the market.

Bert Jones was handed the collection of eight paintings, two of which are signed, when his aunt died in 1984. He is unsure of the exact origin of the paintings, but thinks they may have come into his uncles possession while he was a prisoner-of-war.

Many of the paintings depict bombed German houses and villages. Mr Jones said: Hitlers paintings show a world that is flattened out, which is perhaps why he went on to become the biggest tyrant the world has known. Some people say they might not sell because who would want to buy a painting by Hitler? But who would turn down a collection like this? Theyre a fascinating bit of history.

Mr Jones has had the collection professionally examined twice. One expert said the ink and paper proved they were genuine, while the other believed them to be prints. But even the sceptic said the prints could still be highly valuable.

Both experts declined to put a value on the collection.

Experts also disagree about the number of paintings Hitler painted. Some put the figure at around 300, others say it is around 600. Hitler himself is said to have claimed he painted around 1,000.

Authenticated Hitler paintings are currently on the market for between £7,000 and £28,000 each.
