THE lifeboat world has lost a legendary figure with the death at the age of 98 last week of Mr David Lewis (Dai the Mill), former coxswain of St Davids lifeboat.

Born in Felin Ganol, the family watermill in Merryvale, Mr Lewis (pictured) was small in stature but a giant in character, courage and accomplishment.

He served in St Davids lifeboat from 1936 to 1968, as second coxswain from 1938 and coxswain from 1955, taking part in many epic rescues including the wartime drama when two landing craft sank with the loss of over 80 lives, the World Concord wreck during the 1954 hurricane and the Notre Dame de Fatima incident in 1956, after which he received the RNLI Bronze Medal.
