After 15 weeks of almost 100% fixture completion, Pembrokeshire Cricket suffered an almost-complete first wash-out of the season at a most vital time because with only two week-ends left there are a number of issues to be resolved in the championship, promotion and relegation stakes.

Division One

Current Division One champs Lamphey were already 30 points ahead of chasing Carew before Saturday and they are very hot favourites for a second successive title as they have to face Narberth (away) and then Haverfordwest on The Racecourse knowing that only a disaster or a game called off while Carew played could now seriously affect the final outcome.

The Villagers are left to regret the fact that they have been unable to bowl sides out while Lamphey are good value for their lead because of the inspirational form showed by team captain Dave Lovell.

There is still a lot of interest centred on the other end of the table because although Burton are certainties to yo-yo back into the Second Division it is still to be decided who joins them, with Pembroke still just outside the danger zone that involves neighbours Narberth and Whitland.

Narberth are 18 points ahead of Whitland but have the tougher run-in as they face a Lamphey side still eager to complete their job, followed by an away match against Harrison-Allen Bowl winners Lawrenny.

Whitland have to play away to Pembroke and home to Burton so have the seemingly easier run-in, although at this stage there is little point in going for form because anything can happen.

The Carne verdict? Lamphey as deserved champions and Narberth to stay in the section as Burton and Whitland make the dreaded drop!

Division Two

In Division Two, Hook are already champions and neighbours Llangwm will join them in Division One next year, both sides making a welcome return to the top after gaining a huge points advantage over chasing St Ishmaels and Neyland.

They know it will take an even greater effort to survive and Hook in particular still need to strengthen because they rely heavily on five players and need a batsman or two, plus a bowler.

Llangwm, although second, are perhaps stronger overall, with Andrew Phillips, Darren John, Andrew Harries and Martyn Inward as good an attack as most in the top section. They also look strong in the batting stakes but as club sec Brian James often says, they need more solid and less kamikaze batting throughout the entire season!

Spittal are already doomed to return to Division Three but Narberth Seconds, Johnston or Haverfordwest could join them over the next fortnight.

Narberth Seconds have had a good string of results but are still in the bottom two, with skipper Richard Howell looking for a last charge against Stackpole (away) and then home to Llangwm.

Above them by two points are Johnston, who play Spittal (away) and Stackpole (home), while The Town Stiffs are another nine points ahead but facing tough tussles against Carew Seconds (home) and Neyland (away) they can strengthen from the firsts if they wish - and it is a strange thought in the equation that Narberth Seconds could avoid relegation but still have to go down if their firsts dont manage to stay up!

The Carne verdict? Hearty congratulations to Hook and Llangwm on deserved promotion - with Spittal and Narberth Seconds to go down!

Division Three

The rain meant that Saundersfoot and Llechryd are red-hot favourites for promotion after the latter didnt play against third-placed Cresselly 2nds and are two points behind Saundersfoot but 38 points ahead of Cresselly.

Both face hard matches this weekend as Saundersfoot are home to Cresselly while Llechryd travel to Cardigan for a tough local derby where they will be given no quarter - and it could go to the final matches where the Seasiders are home to Haverfordwest and Llechryd entertain Lawrenny Seconds.

Haverfordwest Thirds are already certs for relegation and will be joined by either Hundleton, Herbrandston or Lawrenny Seconds, who find themselves within two points of each other with two matches left.

Lawrenny 2nds are at home to Herbie this weekend while Hundleton are home to Llanrhian - and the last weekend will see phone messages sent across the county as Saundersfoot have seemingly an easy home match against Haverfordwest while the other two are away.

The Carne Verdict? Saundersfoot to sneak the silverware and Hundleton to join Haverfordwest in Division Four!

Division Four

Manorbier are favourites to win Division Four while Maenclochog and Burton Seconds have the chance to join them - and with Burton able to add a few first teamers if they wish now that they are down themselves. Maenclochog have a lead of ten points so their fate is very much in their own hands because they play Manorbier and Burton - and sec Dai Williams admits that if there is rain aplenty over the next two Saturdays he wouldnt be too unhappy!

The Carne verdict? Manorbier to be champs and Maenclochog to join them in Division Three!

Division Five

Lamphey 2nds, Stackpole and Dinas are engaged in a three-horse race for Division Five, with Lamphey clear favourites since they played on Saturday and gained a nine-wicket success at Llechryd to steal a march on Stackpole, with Dinas another eight points adrift.

Lamphey have two home matches but play Dinas and St Davids, while Dinas play at home against Neyland 2nds - as Stackpole travel to St Davids and then play Llanrhian at home. Its going to be mighty close for the runners-up spot!

At the other end, Llechryd Seconds are already down and either Burton Thirds, Neyland Seconds or Spittal 2nds could still join them. Burton have to play Spittal and this match could decide who goes down.

The Carne verdict? Lamphey (champs) and Stackpole to go up - and Llechryd and Burton Thirds to go down!

Division Six

Carew Thirds are at the top of Division Six with Pembroke Dock 22 points behind but with a claim for points being made to the County Club committee.

Carew and Narberth Seconds, who are six points behind The Dock, have two games left, however, The Dock have only one game to play so they could well find themselves pipped at the post again, even though their two rivals play each other in the final game.

At the other end of the table, spare a thought for Herbrandston Seconds, who are bottom of the whole league set-up, having drawn just one game and lost the rest. But Hughie Devonald and his crew have enjoyed themselves and are bringing on youngsters - so keep up the good work there Hughie Dev and Kevin John!

The Carne verdict? Carew Thirds to be champions and Narberth to join them in promotion - although I feel sorry for The Dock because they are desperate to make some head-way in the league set-up!
