Cricket: Jubilee Cup final Haverfordwest (203 for 8) beat Cresselly (191 for 8)

Haverfordwest won the Jubilee Cup, despite a late challenge by the Cresselly tail-enders on The Racecourse, and skipper Karl Rhead received the trophy from County Club president Stan Richards.

The match was due to be played at the start of the campaign to celebrate the successes of the previous season but was postponed because of bad weather.

Haverfordwest batted first and made a good start through Richard James and Dai Davies who put on 52 runs before Davies was caught for 12 at backward square leg by Andrew Harris off the bowling of his father Richard.

Phil Kirkby threatened to build a score as he rapped two boundaries in his 14 but attempted a straight six and was caught on the boundary near the scorebox by Lyn Richards.

Richard James was run out for 43 (five fours) in a mix-up with Karl Rhead with the score on 83.

Rhead assumed command and, although Steve Phillips failed to make an impact as Lyn Richards took a regulation return catch, he and Paul Luke added 66 in good time.

Rhead was finally dismissed for 46, including five fours and a six from only 40 deliveries, when Matthew Lewis took a low catch off his own bowling.

Huw Scriven departed first ball, caught by opposing keeper Neilson Cole off Richards, but Andrew Phillips chipped in 25 runs from 15 balls alongside Luke's 29, allowing The Town to finish on 203 for 8.

Cresselly made a disappointing start when skipper Lyn Richards was bowled by Phil Kirkby for a duck.

But Julian Arthur and Andrew Harris redressed the balance in a partnership of 56 before Harris fell to Clive Tucker for 19.

Brothers Julian and Damian Arthur took the score to 83 before Julian was adjudged lbw to Matthew Johns for 38 (five fours) and the same bowler took a return catch to dismiss Damian for 26, including a big six.

Richard Harris kept the innings steady with 21 not out but Cresselly fell behind the clock and although Neilson Cole (29) and Matthew Lewis (16 not out in four balls) took Cresselly close with huge sixes they were still 13 runs short of victory at the finish.

Phil Kirkby (2 for 28), Clive Tucker (2 for 21) and Johns (3 for 30) were the pick of The Town bowlers.
