Cricket: Burton 2nds (148 for 8 and 63 for 1) beat Lawrenny 2nds (90 all out and 120 all out)

Burton Seconds were good value for their easy win over their counterparts from Lawrenny in the Alec Colley Cup final.

Lawrenny didn't play to their potential in the batting stakes and could have few complaints about a nine-wicket defeat at Pembroke's Treleet Ground.

The problems started early for Lawrenny after they had been asked to bat first by Burton skipper Dean Hayes.

John Fuller was run out by some good fielding by Matthew Davies with the score on only 8 runs.

Dai Jones followed in similar fashion as he misjudged a single to Andrew Cromwell and paid the price.

Steve Campbell rapped three fours in his 25 but departed a run later when he was caught by Matthew James off Matthew Davies.

Chris Williams batted well at No 4 for Lawrenny to score 20 runs but after he departed Davies caused problems for the other Lawrenny batsmen, running out Phil Williams cheaply and then grabbing three more wickets to finish with 4 for 20 alongside Jonathan Venables (2 for 17).

Lawrenny could only muster 90 all out and in doing so used up only 19.5 of their allotted 22 overs.

Burton also made a stuttering start. Mike Venables was bowled by Lawrenny skipper Alun Evans for a duck and opening partner James Scale departed for a single, bowled by Steve Rees, to leave Burton at 3 for 2.

Chris Campbell flicked a nice six to fine leg but sportingly walked when he got the finest of edges to a ball from Rees and was caught by keeper Dai Jones to leave Burton on 20 for 3.

But then Martin James acted as the perfect foil for the big-hitting Jonathan Venables and this pair added 43 runs in quick time before Venables was beautifully caught on the long-off boundary seeking a big six off John Fuller.

Andrew Cromwell played a vital innings at No 6. The veteran batsman started steadily but soon got into his stride with five fours in his impressive 40 before he departed, having shared a partnership of 69 with James that established a lead of 42 which was finally extended to 58 as James was finally bowled by Alun Evans for 36.

Lawrenny's hopes of a huge second innings total to test Burton were soon in tatters when Chris Williams and Steve Cole, both pushed up the order, were dismissed for a single apiece.

Williams hit a long-hop from Hayes straight to James in the covers and Cole fell to a fine diving catch in the gully by Scale which gave Jonathan Venables another scalp. Steve Campbell and Evans set about staging a recovery but when Evans (29) was stumped by Will Scriven off Hayes and Campbell (30) skied a return catch to Matthew Davies there was little left for Lawrenny to offer.

Phil Williams reached double figures but was stumped by Scriven, as was Ben Cole, and Davies finished with 3 for 37.

Ian Woods spearheaded the Burton bowling with a 4 for 17 spell that made things impossible for Lawrenny, who managed 120 all out thanks to 22 from Mr Extras.

It was a better display than in the first innings but only left Burton needing 63 runs for victory.

James Scale and Mike Venables made a far better start this time, running sensibly between the wickets and waiting to send the odd loose delivery to the boundary.

Scale adopted the anchor role as Venables blasted out five boundaries en-route to a speedy 34 not out, with this pair taking Burton to within 12 runs of success before Scale was caught at mid-off by Alun Evans off John Fuller.

It allowed Chris Campbell to join the fray and strike the winning runs and Burton were good value for their second Colley Cup win on seven outings.

Lawrenny still seek that elusive victory despite a great deal of effort throughout this campaign's competition.

Burton skipper Dean Hayes received the trophy from Pembroke CC president Dai Williams and man of the match sponsor Mike Leighs nominated Matthew Davies for his bowling and fielding.
