A HISTORIC building, which was an ex-servicemen's club for 60 years, may soon be a venue for strippers.

The former RAFA club in Commercial Row, Pembroke Dock, has been renamed the Phoenix Club and the new owners have applied for a licence that would allow them to stage striptease events approximately twice a year.

Owner Debbie Griffiths, former stewardess of the RAFA club, said: "I decided to arrange this event after someone at a ladies' darts night mentioned the idea.

"I don't see anything wrong with it - it's just harmless fun and it will be run properly. "The club must respond to what the customers want. One of the reasons the RAFA club failed was that it wouldn't try new things."

If the licence is granted the Phoenix Club will host a male striptease act on September 10th and a female performer later in the year.

To ensure people are not disturbed by the event the audience will be limited to 75 and performances will be restricted to the club's function room.

John Farrow, secretary of the Pembroke Dock branch of the RAFA, said: "What goes on in the club is nothing to do with us anymore, she is entitled to do whatever she likes.

"It wouldn't have happened when we were running the club, but you've got to move with the times and the new owners have to be able to make money out of the place."

The application was recently put before Pembroke Dock town council which wanted to know what measures would be put into place to ensure that the children's groups which occasionally use the building did not see the events.

The application will now go before the licensing committee of Pembrokeshire County Council.
