THERE was a happy end to a sad tale last week, as beautiful Jenday Conure 'Tickle' was welcomed to Folly Farm after a life of neglect.
The spectacular South American parrot had spent life alone in a small cage, constantly covered to keep him quiet.
He had never been outside, was unfamiliar with human company and had plucked out his feathers through great boredom and distress.
Only after being taken in by kindhearted bird-specialist Al Francis, from St Davids, did Tickle's vibrant plumage return- along with a personality to match.
"I was approached to rehabilitate Tickle after he was rescued. I'm used to raising rescued birds, having achieved many successful rehabilitations in the past," said Al, who provided 18 months of one-to-one care to Tickle to raise his confidence.
"But Tickle is a particular favourite. It took a long time to gain his trust, but now he enjoys human company and likes to be tickled. If you stop, he says 'tickle' so you do it again- hence his name."
Al has now passed Tickle on to Folly Farm, believing it to be an ideal home for such a funny, friendly bird.
Tickle is currently in Folly Farm's pet centre, and after slowly settling in will eventually be moved to a large outdoor aviary.
