The International Karate Plus, David Wrench, The Martini Henry Rifles, Acid Mothers Temple - Matt of Tangled Parrot Promotions has brought them all to west Wales.

As one of the most innovative and visionary promoters in the area, Matt never takes the easy route if there's a leftfield alternative.

Tonight's main act, The Automatic, have made the front page of Sound Nation, the Welsh music industry bible.

They have just inked a deal with record label B-Unique, home to Kaiser Chiefs and The Ordinary Boys, and will be supporting The Ordinary Boys and Hard-fi on a tour this autumn.

As The Stereophonics recently attended their last Cardiff Barfly gig, they must be worth a look.

The electro-rock that these four sharp 19-year-olds (from Cowbridge) produce is genuinely exciting. Although heavily influenced by 80s pop, and with a very 'now' sound, The Automatic don't fall into the "I've heard this before" category and they're much more edgy than the over-slick synth pop of The Killers or The Bravery.

Sometimes sounding like a home grown version of New York's We Are Scientists, sometimes a melodic Bloc Party, they are a clever combination of scampering synths running amok, frenzied guitars and whirring drums, ripped through with bite and wrapped up in big pop ambition.

Their short, sweet set, perfectly formed from the jerky pop of Keep Your Eyes Peeled, the huge melody of Jack Daniels, the shout-along (think Kaiser Chiefs) choruses of Monster and their scalding single (out on November 7th) Recover, is packed with energy, so much so you could swear that keyboard player Pennie, in particular, was directly plugged into the mains.

And their front man and bassist Robbie is knee-bucklingly gorgeous.

Young they may be, but The Automatic are full of passion and purpose, with great songs. Already hot, before long everyone will want to stand close to their flame.

If you were among the, regrettably small, audience at the Waterside you should start practising your "I saw them first" lines, 'cos I have a feeling we're all going to be using them very soon.
