A CLIMBER fell from Saddle Head, near Castlemartin, on Wednesday, sparking off a full-scale rescue operation.
The man, who has not been named, suffered deep lacerations and a suspected broken leg, after falling more than 20 feet before hitting an outcrop, which stemmed his fall.
Tenby, St Govan's and Castlemartin coastguard teams, together with the south Pembrokeshire sector manager and RAF rescue helicopter from Chivenor were called to Saddle Head, west of St Govan's Head.
A helicopter winchman and paramedic were lowered to the 27-year-old climber and his injuries were stabilised. He was then airlifted by the helicopter to Withybush hospital.
A Coastguard spokesman, said: "The rescue was particularly difficult due to the fast fading light and ruggedness of the high cliffs, with the Coastguards and the helicopter crew again doing a magnificent job."
The area is a favourite climbing spot for enthusiasts, offering climbs of varying degrees of difficulty.
