Rugby - National League Division One Narberth 16 Blackwood 8

A late try by strong-running centre Neil Davies ensured Narberth made a winning home start as they outlasted a gritty Blackwood side which kept plugging away until Davies finished them off with the aid of a Scott Penney conversion.

The Otters had the better of the first quarter but winger Rob Irvine was unable to land any of three penalty chances before outside half Penney took over and landed a penalty in the 25th minute which proved to be the only three points of a tight first period.

Blackwood started the second period with a bang as No 8 Jamie Sims took a catch at a line out and was driven over in the left corner for an unconverted try - but the Otters stuck to their task as Jamie Bohata, Jason Jennings, Simon Delaney and skipper Alan Phillips fought hard alongside Lewis Wood, Barry Davies and Naude Pretorius.

Penney landed a 48th minute penalty to nudge them ahead again and he repeated the dose after Jeremy Lloyd had kicked Blackwood back in front.

It meant that Narberth were a point ahead with the game entering its closing stages and then Bohata set up the platform with a good lineout take that allowed play to be swung open by Adrian Killa for Davies to shrug off his marker and cross near the posts for Penney to add the extras - and give the Otters a morale-boosting win as a result.
