A packed audience at the De Valence Pavilion in Tenby enjoyed eleven bouts organised by Pembroke and Tenby Amateur Boxing Clubs as youngsters from the area took on some of the best talent from elsewhere in South Wales.

Included for the first time at Tenby was an exhibition bout featuring two local girls as Tenby's April Drake took on Sharlene Jones, the Pembroke youngster who has already forced her way into the Welsh women's squad with her stylish boxing and general ring craft.

They started the second half of a packed programme and although there was no decision since it was an exhibition bout, both female boxers were as warmly applauded as any of their male counterparts.

In attendance, and chatting to all the young boxers beforehand, was Enzo Macarinelli, the undefeated professional World Champion from Swansea, with Scott Gammer, a real contender for the British Heavyweight crown also earning a special cheer.

Former pro boxers Mike Morrison and Steve Davies, who both had over 100 pro bouts, and previously graced the amateur section, also took the audience's applause as MC Bill Carne kept the audience informed.

The evening got off to a flying start as Billy Davies took on Nick Turner (Carmarthen), who took a standing count in the third round which just swung the bout in Davies's favour. Both boxers were making their ring debut and quite rightly received congratulations afterwards from referee Billy Jones (Cwmgors).

James Thomas of Merlins Bridge ABC is certainly one to watch in future as he proved too sharp for a gritty Kevin Probert (Tenby), winning with a first-round stoppage against the debutant Probert.

Pembroke's Lee Wagenes also found Shane Lee (Splott ABC, Cardiff) a little too hot to handle as the referee stopped the bout in round two after Wagenes had taken two standing counts from referee Jones. Luke Evans (Tenby) looked good against Sean Lewis (Gwent ABC, Swansea) but lost narrowly on points.

The best junior bout was undoubtedly between Sean Corcoran (Taibach, Port Talbot) and Kyle Morrison (Pembroke), which Corcoran won narrowly - but there was consolation for Morrison as he was adjudged 'Best Junior Boxer of the Night' to receive a special trophy from adjudicator Mike Haines, the popular former coach of Whitland ABC.

Close behind was the contest between Chris Ellery (Splott) and Ben Baker (Tenby), which Ellery won but Baker again showed what a talented young boxer he is as he pushed Ellery all the way.

Rudie Jones (Pembroke) was stopped in the second round by Kieran Fry (Glyncorrwg, Port Talbot) after looking on top but receiving a blow to the ribs which clearly winded the talented young Pembroke boxer.

The first senior bout between Chris Ware (Bonymaen) and Mark Davies (Pembroke) was rightly adjudged by Mike Haines as the best of the evening, as Ware shaded the verdict in an all-action bout where no quarter was asked.

Even closer was the contest featuring Sean Weaver (Carmarthen) and Leigh Laville, the young Pembroke senior very unlucky to lose on a split verdict after looking on top in the third round against debutant Weaver.

More successful was Pembroke clubmate Peter Harrison, who stopped his opponent Peter Walker (Taibach) in the first round, to round off another successful evening of amateur boxing, where high skill levels were evident and along with exemplary sportsmanship.
