PEMBROKESHIRE heavyweight Scott 'The Hammer' Gammer narrowly secured a one-point victory over hard-hitting Russian Suren Kalachyam, in London, on Saturday, writes Simon Carr.
The six-round bout started badly for the 29-year-old, from Castle Quarry, Monkton, who lost the first round and was floored by the 18st Moscow opponent in the second.
However, despite this setback the British number one contender showed his superior pedigree comfortably, winning the next four rounds to beat Kalachyam on points.
Scott told the Western Telegraph: "I was really disappointed with my performance and the way in which I won.
"I'm determined to work even harder now to show people what I'm all about."
Other fighters on the bill included Matt Skelton, John McDermott, Audley Harrison, Danny Williams and Amir Khan.
The father-of-two will be fighting for the British title early in the new year.
