Milford Haven man, Peter Eaton has been found guilty of arms smuggling and possession of an illegal weapon in Afghanistan.

Mr Eaton, who has spent the past ten weeks in a Kabul jail received a two-year suspended sentence, with the condition that he needs a local guarantor. It is thought he will be able to leave the country in the next two weeks.

His brother Tim Eaton said: "We received a phone call from the Foreign Office last Wednesday (December 7th) to say he is being set free. He's got to wait in Kabul for two weeks. His wife was crying with joy.

"All I know at this stage is that he has been kept in a four man cell. I cannot begin to imagine what kind of conditions he has been kept in.

"He was just in the wrong place at he wrong time. He's my kid brother, thousands of miles from home and we've been worried sick, but now he should be coming home for Christmas."

Eaton, a 52-year-old engineer, was arrested with five others in October. He had faced a sentence of up to six years in a Kabul jail.

MP Stephen Crabb said: "This is obviously good news for the family. Mr Eaton will count himself very lucky that he has only received a two-year suspended sentence.

"I feel the Foreign Office and Embassy in Kabul have been excellent throughout this episode and have responded promptly to the questions and concerns raised in recent weeks."
