Over 300 Jobcentre and benefits office staff in Pembrokeshire will stage a two-day walk-out next week as part of a national protest over job cuts.

The Public and Commercial Services Union is angry that the Department of Work and Pensions has cut 14,500 jobs in the UK and plans to axe a further 30,000 at a time when services have deteriorated.

More than 60% of PCS members voted in favour of strike action after a ballot.

The walk-out will take place on Thursday and Friday next week, January 26th and 27th.

The union's west Wales branch was due to meet yesterday (Tuesday) to discuss details, including picketing arrangements.

DWP streamlining affecting Pembrokeshire includes the axeing of Jobcentres at Tenby and Fishguard, with 'one-stop shops' for all work and benefits advice in Haverfordwest, Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock.

This has resulted in voluntary redundancies and a number of workers transferring to the DWP's Pembroke Dock call centre, which handles enquiries from the London area.
