Division Four (west) Fishguard and Goodwick 25 - Pembroke 7

Fishguard and Goodwick caused a major surprise in the section as they played really well to defeat a Pembroke side which never quite attuned itself to the narrow school pitch and played for 45 minutes with 14 men after flanker Luke Hansford received his second yellow card.

The Seagulls were boosted by having Romeo Colella at No 8 and the inclusion of hooker Evan Davies, his brother Graham at scrum half and Willie Myles at prop certainly gave a stability to the side that helped the talented youngsters, even if it did add 125 years to the team's combined total since Willie is 48 and the Davies boys are 39 and 38 respectively!

Such was their influence that the Scarlets were unable to get on top in the forward exchanges until very late on but by then the match had drifted away from them and although they then showed their capabilities with some superb drives all they could muster was a late try from centre Paul Williams which his namesake Phil at fly half managed to convert.

Both teams and supporters observed a minute's silence for Frank Power, Pembroke's very popular club doctor who had sadly passed away the day before.

It was Fishguard who made the better start as Owain Jones marked his first game back in action with a good run down the right flank and Colella announced his intentions at the head of a concerted Fishguard drive in which Emyr Hughes, Karl Phillips, Steve and Nathan Jenkins were prominent.

Pembroke had Hansford yellow-carded and Hughes kicked the Seagulls ahead in the 18th minute from the resulting penalty.

Fishguard claimed the game's first try after 25 minutes, following a general warning to both sides about conceding penalties on the floor.

Graham Davies took a quick tap penalty to set up a drive to the posts.

Quick ruck ball enabled Steve Jenkins to stand in the outside half berth and fend off a tackle as he reached over the line for an unconverted try.

Hansford departed for his second technical offence after 35 minutes and worse was to follow for the Scarlets from the resultant kick to the corner, as Colella received the ball and crashed over for a try which Hughes converted.

Pembroke had the chance of a simple three points at the other end but a quickly-taken tap penalty was knocked on.

The Seagulls extended their lead as the ubiquitous Graham Davies made a diagonal break and from the ruck it was replacement Mark George who grabbed a try which Hughes converted.

Pembroke gradually gained parity up front and Dai Beynon and Lee James did well at the lineouts to set up some concerted drives.

Owain Jones looked to have scored from one thrust but the referee decided otherwise .

Scarlets' skipper Richard Mason also went close after Evan Davies had been yellow-carded but Gerwyn Hughes landed another Fishguard penalty.

Paul Williams' try brought scant consolation for Pembroke as the Seagulls celebrated only their third win in 12 matches.
