DEAR EDITOR - I read with interest Dr Burn's Letter of May 3rd.

I am glad he is willing to express his support for renewable energies and wish to answer his concerns regarding Wave Dragon.

Wave Dragon operates similarly to a traditional hydroelectric power plant. The structure remains relatively still, allowing water to rush over the ramp into the storage reservoir, and then drain out, turning the turbines. It is the only floating wave energy converter that generates electricity directly from the power of the water. The design and mooring of the device is being completed by a Norwegian firm with decades of experience in design of offshore oil rigs in the equally uncompromising North Sea.

The deployment of the Wave Dragon in the Pembrokeshire SAC was not a decision taken lightly and one that has been, and will be, closely scrutinised by the local authorities and conservation bodies.

After a survey of the traffic through the site, we met with relevant local and national users of the area including the Coastguard, MHPA, the RNLI, West Wales Fishing authority and more. Their conclusions were that the Wave Dragon posed no additional risk for commercial shipping into the Haven.

Wave Dragon is a highly sophisticated wave energy converter. It is also a highly powerful device with only 11 units being capable of supplying enough electricity for every household in Pembrokeshire.

We believe we have a technology that has the potential to supply cheap and reliable electricity to Pembrokeshire and beyond and will do this without generating any green house gasses and almost no pollution at all.
