A Pembrokeshire teenager, who almost died after falling into a diabetic coma, is hoping to snatch success at the next Commonwealth Games.

Thirteen-year-old Abigail Walters is already a champion and has broken records at weightlifting.

She recently set new Welsh records in the snatch at the 13, 14 and 15-year-old level.

She is British under-13 champion at the event and Welsh champion in the 13, 14, 17 and 18-year-old level.

The amazing thing is that she is diabetic and last September her family thought they had lost her when she went into a deep coma.

But she was determined to continue weightlifting and is encouraging other young people with diabetes to take up sports.

Abigail, of 14 The Close, Johnston, has just been selected to train with the Welsh squad to go to the next Commonwealth Games in 2010 in India.

She started weightlifting at Tasker Milward School, Haverfordwest, and now belongs to the Welsh and British Weightlifting Federation.

She travels to Cardiff to train with the Welsh squad and to Holyhead for competitions.

But, the motivated teenager has to do all her everyday training by herself at home, as there is no local club.

Abigail is now looking for support and sponsorship to enable her to represent Pembrokeshire and Wales at the Commonwealth Games.

She can be contacted on 01437 899383.
