A former Chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Councillor Anne Hughes, has been named as the authority’s new Cabinet member for Safeguarding, Child Protection and the Well-Being of Children and Young People.

Council Leader, Councillor John Davies, told an Extraordinary Meeting of the Authority yesterday (Tuesday, 6th September) that he would be making the appointment.

The move follows criticism of the Council’s child protection arrangements in recent reports by the inspectorate bodies, CSSIW and Estyn.

Independent Group member Councillor Hughes, from Milford Haven, is a former Deputy Cabinet Member of Housing and in 2009 – 2010 was only the second woman Chairman of the Council.

A Milford Haven Town Councillor, she has twice been mayor of the town.

Councillor Davies said: “I welcome the return to Cabinet of Councillor Hughes and given her previous experience, she is able to hit the ground running.

“In addition, as a Member of the Children and Families Overview and Scrutiny Committee she has displayed great commitment and understanding which makes her an ideal choice for the new role.”

The Education and Welsh Language portfolio will remain with Councillor Huw George.
