Betty left the safety of the Welsh valleys to study nursing. After qualifying Betty worked in children and midwifery nursing and later became a theatre sister in wartime London. After the War, Betty returned to Wales to become Casualty Sister in Haverfordwest Hospital. She enjoyed painting and decorating and did so with taste and verve. Betty loved driving and she and Max spent many happy afternoons driving around her beloved Wales. Later she met and she married William Thurston and moved to Portfield where they enjoyed working together in Bill’s beloved garden.

In retirement Betty full of energy and enthusiasm became involved in voluntary work and with Bill delivered meals on wheels and she supported Bill in his work for the Royal British Legion. Shortly after their 25 wedding anniversary her husband Bill died from a heart attack. Betty was an active member of the Haverfordwest Townswoman’s Guild, she belonged to the Teddy’s group who knitted teddies and produced many excellent Jean Greenhowe’s knitted dolls for charity. Betty was always ready to take on a challenge and she took up lacemaking and was a member of the Cleddau Lace Makers and produced some lovely lace delighting family and friends with gifts of her work.

In recent years Betty herself suffered from the results of a serious heart attack sustained following Bills death. Betty was kind, generous, optimistic, cheerful and courageous and a very lovely lady. She will be very much missed by her son Max, his wife and all her family and friends.
