The RSPCA is appealing for any witnesses to get in touch after a young Alsatian was found abandoned off Flemming Crescent today.

Local officer Keith Hogben was called by residents to the woods opposite homes on the Haverfordwest street after they heard a dog barking.

Mr Hogben said that the Alsatian bitch, believed to be about two years old, had been tied to a tree near a steep drop and it had slipped it would have been strangled.

"Whoever has done this is totally irresponsible. It's just sad because there is no need for it. Someone must know who this dog belongs to," said Mr Hogben.

Luckily it is thought the dog had only been in the woods for a few hours but could have got into serious trouble and Mr Hogben added that he is determined to see that those responsible are prosecuted.

Any witnesses or anyone who knows who the dog belongs to can call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.

Anyone with a dog they can no longer look after is encouraged to ring the local dog warden on 01437 764551.
