Supermarket giant Sainsbury's is promising 500 new jobs if plans to set up shop in Haverfordwest get the go ahead, the Western Telegraph can reveal.

Sainsbury's want to build a 60,000 sq ft shop alongside a planned 900 home development on land adjacent to Slade Lane.

The proposals for the Sainsbury's store and the housing development now owned by Conygar - the development company behind plans for Fishguard marina - will be on display next week for the public to find out more before the planning process begins.

The Leader of Pembrokeshire County Council said the announcement was further good news for the Pembrokeshire economy.

“This is an exciting proposal for the county and the county town in particular with the possibility for a high number of full-time and part-time jobs” said Councillor John Davies.

The proposed supermarket would have 477 car parking spaces, a restaurant, deli, bakery, fish and meat counters as well as clothing and a petrol station.

It also proposes to improve access from the store to the town centre for both drivers and pedestrians.

Sainsbury's regional development executive Graham Wilson said: "This would be the first full-range Sainsbury's store in Pembrokeshire and would complement the existing store in Tenby.

"Our proposals would also create a large number of jobs for local people."

The Sainsbury's and housing development plans will be on display at the Hotel Mariners, Haverfordwest, 10am to 6pm on Friday, November 18th and 10am to 2pm on Saturday, November 19th.
