A Japan-tastic £1,524 has been raised for children orphaned in last year’s tsunami.

Around 300 people attended a fundraising afternoon at Haverfordwest’s Picton Centre organised by the Pembrokeshire Japan Society.

Visitors enjoyed demonstrations of Japanese dance; traditional tea ceremonies and pottery as well as face painting; the chance to don a kimono and sample delicious Japanese food.

All the proceeds will go to a Japanese charity which provides tsunami orphans, as well as children who lost one parent in the disaster, with funds for their education.

“We were overwhelmed by the huge, warm support of local people and we are very grateful for that,” said organiser Yoriko Omae.

“The hall was packed and was full of laughs, smiles and happy voices. We had a constant stream of people throughout the day.

“It was also great to see many people, from babies to senior citizens, enjoying Japanese activities, flavours and atmosphere.

“Thanks to all those who supported us, we have raised £1524.17. We are extremely pleased by the results.”

Anybody who attended the event and wants to share photos or experiences should contact the Pembrokeshire Japan Society by e-mailing pembrokeshirejapan@gmail.
