Doctors across Pembrokeshire are expected to take part in today's British Medical Association industrial action.

Non-urgent cases will be postponed, but emergency patients will be treated.

Members of the union which represents GPs and other doctors voted in favour of strike action recently over potential changes to their pensions.

Dr Lawrence Williams, of St Thomas Surgery, Haverfordwest, said he was unable to speak on behalf of other doctors, but said that individual practices were planning what to do.

“Clearly patients that need to be seen, will be seen, as was the guidance from the BMA. There is strong feeling among doctors that this [pension changes] is unnecessary action by the government.”

The BMA is opposed to proposals which it states would mean doctors contributing more to their pensions, working longer and receiving less in retirement.

A Hywel Dda spokesman said: “Following the announcement of strike action by the BMA, the Health Board is assessing the impact on services and developing contingency plans to minimise disruption to its patients and services.

“The Health Board kindly asks patients not to call regarding their appointment status. If scheduled care and appointments are affected, those patients will be contacted at the earliest opportunity.”
