This month's column sees South Wales Chamber of Commerce director Graham Morgan look ahead to 2014.

“As this year draws to an end, it is an ideal time to take a forward look to what 2014 has to offer businesses in west Wales.

“A new world awaits when superfast broadband arrives in Pembroke in June 2014. I really can’t emphasise enough how important it is that businesses ready themselves to take full advantage of this opportunity.

“Superfast has the potential to be a game-changer for businesses, allowing them to be more productive, more cost-effective and to compete on a global scale.

“With fast, reliable access to the international market, businesses can start to think outside their locale.

“Those businesses in the tourism sector in particular have an opportunity here to use the faster speeds to upload high-quality video, and really show off what they have to offer to the rest of the world.

“You can register your interest at www.superfast-cymru.com and I would encourage as many businesses as possible to sign up.

“Unlocking the potential of renewable energy is going to be one of our crusades during 2014.

“We know from our quarterly surveys that rising energy prices are an increasing concern, but businesses in west Wales have an edge here, sitting as they do in a hub of renewable energy development.

“We are planning an energy conference in early April to help businesses tap into this resource, and I will give more detail in this column nearer the time.

“If you are planning to make only one New Year’s resolution this January, then I would suggest that it is to try work more collaboratively with other businesses during 2014.

“There is a tendency for businesses to operate in isolation, but by working together and pooling resources, businesses can increase their opportunities to win new contracts, target new markets, develop and grow together.

“Finally, I would like to introduce Evan Davies, our business development officer based at the Bridge Innovation Centre in Pembroke Dock.

“Evan is the person to contact if you want any more information on these issues or any assistance with your business. You can reach him via evan.davies@southwaleschamber.co.uk or on 07791 585835.
